Module 5 in Narva (18–22 May,2026): Strategic Innovation in Border Security

The 2nd iteration of the European Joint Master in Strategic Border Management (EJMSBM) included Module 5, delivered in Narva (Estonia) from 18 to 22 May, 2026. The module, titled Strategic Innovation and Technology in Border Security, focused on equipping participants with the analytical and practical skills needed to understand and assess emerging technological developments in the context of European Integrated Border Management (EIBM).

The aim of the module was to critically evaluate major technological trends relevant to EIBM and assess their feasibility in terms of effectiveness, strategic compatibility, applicability, and cost efficiency. A key emphasis was placed on fostering innovative approaches to address specific border management challenges and improve operational outcomes. The module also highlighted the importance of sustainability when introducing new measures and technologies.

The contact week in Narva (18–22 May, 2026) brought together lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions led by experts from academia and institutions such as Frontex and national border agencies. Topics ranged from innovation theory, leadership, and emerging border technologies to artificial intelligence, intellectual property rights, fundamental rights, and data protection. Participants also explored funding opportunities, research and development frameworks, and societal acceptance of security technologies. Group presentations and creative sessions allowed students to apply theoretical concepts to practical challenges, reinforcing collaboration and applied problem-solving skills.

Overall, Module 5 provided a comprehensive and practice-oriented learning experience, combining strategic thinking, technological awareness, and innovation-driven approaches to modern border security challenges.
